June 21, 2009: The IT park project that has been surfing the approval documents is finally inching toward realization with nine IT companies responding to the global tender floated by the Department of Information Technology. Five Indian, one Canadian, and three Bhutanese IT companies are among the ten companies that have already purchased the bidding documents. |

At a glance, Phuentsholing has no room for expansion. But a closer scrutiny reveals huge swaths of mismanaged and under-utilized land. When the finance ministry inaugurated its new five-storey regional revenue and customs office in Phuentsholing on April 17 this year, it was another tight slap to the choking landscape of Bhutan’s business capital. The humungous air-conditioned structure, built at Nu 57.9 million, stares straight up into the vast open sky. One may say it’s a government response to the Nu 52.3-million shopping mall built by the central monk body recently. |

Sangay Choden, who passed Class XII in 2004, said it was her high marks in Commerce that decided her admission in a good college. “It helped my percentage go up,” she said. But that was long ago. The subject that gives the stream its name is facing a major identity crisis. And the Royal University of Bhutan’s ability rating for admissions to tertiary institutes is the villain here. |
