June 13, 2008-Gelephu: A former assistant accountant of Department of Forest in Sarpang is being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office for embezzling office funds amounting to Nu 1,328,232.

According to sources, Namgay Wangdi was transferred to Mongar even after the department was aware of the embezzlement.

An official from the department and member committee probing the case said the lapses in the account were discovered during the ‘handing-taking’ in May when Namgay Wangdi was being replaced by a new assistant accountant.

“The management probed the issue after they were notified by the new accountant assistant,” he said.

The official added that Namgay Wangdi couldn’t be suspended because the department was recovering the embezzled amount. The office had recovered Nu 70,000 from Namgay Wangdi as of May.

He said the ministry did an internal auditing and the Royal Audit Authority is currently working on the case.
