RUB to introduce 14 masters program by 2013

February 28, 2010: In the next three years, the Royal University of Bhutan will aspire to become a highly reputed institute for higher learning using Bhutan’s unique position in areas of learning and research such as GNH, Buddhist Studies, Bhutanese Culture and History, Arts (all forms) and design, Traditional Medicine, among others and support Bhutan’s vision to become a “Knowledge economy” driven by GNH values.

RUB will also introduce masters programs in 10 - 14 disciplines by 2013. 

This was part of the University’s performance compact signed by between the RUB Vice chancellor and the education minister on February 26.

RUB has also plans to transform all of its ten colleges bringing in innovative programs and enhancing the priority needs of the country.

Rub will introduce Masters Programs in Education in Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies in Samtse College of Education; Masters in Hydro Power Engineering, Architecture, Information Technology in College of Science and Technology; Masters in Environmental Science, Rural Development Studies in College of Natural Resources; Masters in  Media Courses, Economic Development, M.A in Maths and English in Sherubtse College; Masters of Education in Dzongkha, Primary Education in Paro College of Education; M.A in Bhutanese Culture and Bhutanese Language Literature in ILCS; MBA and Law in Gedu College of Bhutanese Studies; Masters of Science in Traditional Medicines in National Institute of Traditional Medicine.

The Vice-Chancellor of the RUB, Dasho Pema Thinley said, “RUB as an institution will work hard for the socio-economic development of the country.”

With the Compact being signed, the RUB will operate as an autonomous government public sector, undertaking with both independent human resources and financial policies and processes. “RUB will have its own HR Plans/processes different from RCSC,” he added.

The University will increase the total number of students from the current 4926 students in 2009 to 9000 by 2013. The University will also provide places up to 18% of its total capacity for continuing education. Continuing education, the Vice chancellor said, will provide a platform for the adults to pursue higher education.

RUB will also enhance GNH infused learning environment in the colleges. The Vice Chancellor said they need to have faculty who are aware of GNH. He added that the Compact Agreement will bring excellence in fusing its programs with Gross National Happiness.

The programs RUB provides will also be increased from 43 in 2009 to 84 in 2013, inclusive of Masters programs from 1 in 2009 to 10-14 in 2013 and at least one Ph D Program.

Speaking at the Press Conference, education minister said “the Compact agreement is the landmark in the history of the country. It is the pledge to expand the intellectual horizon of the country.”

The compact is part of the government initiative plans in generating employment for 75,000 people institutionalizing good governance. The Performance Facilitation Unit (PFU) that the government has set up facilitates this process.
