How did you become a film maker? As a child I grew up watching so many films and that was the inspiration, so I decided to be a filmmaker some day. And here I am.Did you have any trainings in filmmaking? I did my degree in production, direction and TV journalism from AAFT, in Noida, India. What are the bottlenecks that Bhutanese film industry is facing? There is a lack of proper screening halls, loan provisions to upcoming filmmakers, musicians etc., and proper promotion platform required for promoting the products. We also need the insurance facilities for film production. What are the films that you have produced/directed? So far I have been able to produce two films: Lam-Toen (The Guide) and Sem Dha Sem (Heart to Heart). My debut direction was Nge Sem Nge Sem, and that of technical direction: Tshe Chhang Nga. Any upcoming projects? I will be directing a film in May or June. The film is called GARRU-THIMPHU CHORRU-THIMPHU. What are the challenges you face in making a movie? There is a lack of trained full time artists, lack of technical expertise, lack of independent studios. I also wish that the government is able to lease out/allocate land for film city, music and theatre institutes. How are the actors/actresses? Bhutanese film actors/actresses are equipped with inborn talents but they have to maintain a work ethic and focus on their acting in different roles. What do you have to say apropos the development of Bhutanese film industry? Bhutanese film industry is booming. More and more youth are taking up filmmaking as a serious profession. We’ll have more filmmakers and world class performers competing even in the international market. What do you have to say to the people who aspire to be an actor/actress? To all the Bhutanese people, this industry requires lots and loads of talents. Bhutanese from all walks of life can take up acting and filmmaking as a serious profession.
