Bhutan moves up in HDI ranking
Written by Sonam Pelvar
Bhutan has moved up four places in its ranking in the UN’s Human Development Index (HDI) of 2009. It was positioned at 131 in the 2009 HDI and falls in the category of Medium Human Development. Earlier in 2008, Bhutan was ranked135.

Bhutan will be presenting its report for the Universal periodic Review (UPR) of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in December 2009.The UPR is a unique process that takes place under the auspices of the UNHRC which involves a review of the human rights records of all 192 UN member States once every four years.

The HDI for the year was released in Bangkok and at the UN headquarters in New York. It forms part of the ‘Human Development Report 2009’ which is produced annually by the UN Development Program (UNDP).

India has been ranked at 134 on the HDI, six points down from last year’s 128. Meanwhile, Pakistan was ranked 141on the index, three positions down from its 138 ranking in 2008.

The Human Development Index measures achievements in terms of life expectancy, educational attainment and adjusted real income.
