Seismic terror wreaks havoc

The death toll of the September 21 earthquake has reached 12. The seismic terror has at the same time wreaked hellish havoc damaging dzongs, lhakhangs, schools and houses.

In Mongar three women and a 2-year old boy in Narang gewog have been killed. Serious damages have been caused to more than 50 houses. Twelve chortens and seven lhakhangs have also been damaged and three Gup offices have also been damaged. More than four school buildings have been partially damaged.

In Trashigang, two men in Yangneer gewog and a seven year old boy in Jomtshang, Udzorong have been killed. More than 50 houses, 19 chortens, seven lhakhangs and 3 gup offices have been seriously damaged. The earthquake had also caused severe cracks on the Trashigang dzong. The roads have been blocked in many parts of Trashigang.

In Samdrupjongkhar, four Dantak labourers, three women and one man, were killed by falling boulders. Major damages have been reported on the Lhuentse dzong in Kurtoe. According to dzongkhag reports cracks had appeared all over the dzong and people in the dratshang have been moved out since then.

While in Trongsa the earthquake has tilted the sertho of the Trongsa dzong, Yongla gonpa in Pemagatshel and Drametse lhakhang have also been reported to be damaged.

The earth quake which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale hit the country at around 2:53 on the afternoon of Monday. The epicenter of the earthquake was somewhere between Trashigang and Mongar.
